VALUE DELIVERED

As the single-source provider for design, installation, and maintenance, Havel is ensuring that a facility once designed to handle only a small amount of data is now fully capable of securely processing more transactions in a second than Wall Street handles in a week.

OBJECTIVES

When Frontier combined 25 customer data centers in various parts of the country into three regional facilities, it needed to manage the migration of data to the new locations so that there would be no unplanned outages or loss of vital information. In addition, the three remaining facilities — selected for their strategic locations — required upgrading as well as tested and proven methodologies to ensure success.

SOLUTIONS

As the controls and building automation service provider to Frontier (previously GTE) for more than 30 years, Havel was in a unique, trusted position to understand and advise the client on how best to meet its new capacity in Ft. Wayne. Serving as architect, engineer, and installer, Havel upgraded a DOS-based system to a web-based HVAC controls system that could be viewed and adjusted from anywhere in the facility. In the carefully controlled datacenter environment, a two-degree differential can mean the total loss of critical information, so Havel also worked closely with the client and the GC to install pre-alarm systems that will annunciate in the event of a threatening rise or fall in temperature. Havel also signed a fullservice contract with the client to ensure ongoing, optimum function of the system.

BACKGROUND

Frontier is one of the largest data processing organizations and systems integrators in the United States. The size and scope of its operations gives customers scalability, security, and economies of scale.
