BACKGROUND
Glen Oaks Community College is a comprehensive post-secondary educational institution
offering college transfer courses, vocational-technical education programs, lifelong education,
community services, and student support programs. With nearly 1,000 students, it grants
three certifi cate levels and an associate degree.
OBJECTIVES
To restore heat to two penthouses on a fast-track basis.
SOLUTIONS
This project originated on a Thursday afternoon when the client discovered a major
underground leak in the heating pipes running between its boiler room and two main campus
penthouses. At the time, the temperature was in the mid 30’s and was projected to drop below
freezing early the following week.
As a result, the college president asked Havel to uncover the underground piping,
disconnect it, and run new piping above ground to the penthouses, making those areas
available for use when classes started the following Monday. He also asked the company to let
him know by 4:00 p.m. Sunday if the goal would be reached.
Havel responded with a turnkey solution that offered single-point-of-contact management
and responsibility. Company personnel arrived on site quickly. They immediately isolated
the leak and modifi ed the air handler to maintain as much heat as possible. Within 36 hours,
the site was fully manned with all materials, tools, and supplies, including approximately 800
linear feet of 6- and 8-inch supply and return piping. Thirty-six hours later, heat had been
restored to the entire complex.
