VALUE DELIVERED
Havel, along with its parent company Shambaugh & Son—also an EMCOR company—not
only upgraded and extended the mechanical systems to accommodate a 120,000 sq. ft. addition
that included new operating, pre-op and recovery rooms, but also enhanced the building control
systems to provide greater fl exibility. Special modifi cations and designs help the client maintain
uninterrupted hospital services when power demands reached critical levels.
OBJECTIVES
Since it opened, a demographic shift has taken place in Ft. Wayne, resulting in the client’s need
to serve a larger portion of the city’s population. Within one year, the facility was at capacity.
In addition, Dupont Hospital, once the only major healthcare facility in its area, has also seen
competition move in, spurring the need to expand its services.
SOLUTIONS
In addition to extending the existing controls system and connecting the latest building
automation technology to a new central plant, Havel installed web-based graphics on the
system to provide easier and more fl exible control from any PC workstation—including offsite
and laptop computers. Individual PCs, such as nurse’s stations, now have tailored screens
to enable users to perform tasks specifi c to their duties more effi ciently.
This was a very fast-tracked project of various phases, requiring careful coordination with
general contractor Weigand Construction to ensure that construction worked around the lifeand-
death demands of daily hospital life. Havel provided a single-source solution, performing
CAD/3D, custom-panel design and fabrication, and installation of controls and building
automation systems entirely in-house.
